Clayworks Carving Techniques

CARVING TECHNIQUE

Last week some of our adult classes experimented and had fun incorporating carving.  We created our ceramic projects and then applied brown slip to our pieces.  We let the pieces set up a bit and then carved our own special designs into the brown slip, revealing the white clay below.  In the glazing process, this will technique brings to life beautiful dramatic colors. Some samples of the students work is below.

The outside of this bowl was glazed in green opal, then wiped off.  The rich brown clay highlights the contrasting green carving nicely.  The inside of the bowl is a beautiful combination of two glazes, Christmas Red and Red Gold!
